Visit to University of Alicante

Leaded by the University of Alicante (UA), the European Union has launched a prime project with Libyan universities in quality assurance (QA) under its Tempus programme. The first meeting of this bilateral cooperation was held on 5th and 6th of March in Alicante to discuss the work ahead.

During the event, Libyan universities top Management had the opportunity to visit university of Alicante Quality office and to meet the Qulity assurance staff  in  order to be familiar with quality assurance  infrastructure,  procedure and practices in EU universities.

The newly launched three-year project “Fostering Quality Assurance Culture at Libyan Universities (FOCUS)” aims at developing a viable and sustainable QA system within Libyan universities through the exchange of professional experience with the European counterparts. This two-day meeting at the UA allows all partners involved to talk over the anticipated tasks in two public and one private Libyan universities situated in the East and Benghazi, including one of the oldest universities, Garyounis University that was founded in 1955.

As suggested in the project acronym, the project will FOCUS on the challenge on quality assurance of higher education institutions (HEI) that is pinpointed in the review of Higher Education in Libya published by the European Commission. UA will collaborate closely with one Irish and two Swedish higher education institutions that have particular expertise in the subject so as to archive the project’s objective.

Rector and director of quality assurance unit from each Libyan university attended the meeting, while theses representatives will then widely disseminate the project within their own institution.
